the wheel is 6 ft from spoke end to end. has a 21" brass hub 5" axle bore with NO keyway has kingspoke as part of the handle has 4 threaded holes for brass Eyebolts (2 are there) they are across from kingspoke and in line with kingspoke has 2 wood inlaid rings on both sides of wheel. some short pieces are missing on the back side. the wood is a dark and medium brown and almost reddish throughout wheel. backside of wheel has a deep 1" wide groove and 1" deep all the way around the wheel.
father in-law was a carpenter and did some remodeling for Tom Matte (Baltimore Colts running back in late 60's). He traded work for the ships wheel. this was in 1971. It has been in our house ever since
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an exceptionally well crafte ship wheel, possibly made from some kind of mahogany and maple. Without any provenance it is difficult to determin the age, but first quarter 20th century is likely. The estimate is based on similar ship wheels currently offered or sold at auction. Recent auction results are much lower than those of the 1990s. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
