Oil and underpainting on old raw canvas primed and stretched on old hard wood stretcher bars. Beautiful fabric detail. Various glazes brought up the color. Crackling shows the technique and helps verify the age. This looked like it had been cut from a larger canvas. But otherwise typical of his royal family portraits. Acquired from an estate clearing unframed in East Hampton, NY in 2001 through a consignment store. An artist and an art & antiques gallery confirmed their belief it was from Lely. Approx 1675+. I framed it later.
Never framed or exhibited. It was found in an antique from an old estate in East Hampton NY. I saw it brought into "Consignments" and grabbed it immediately. I think I paid $5,000 to hold it, and think I had to pay more as dealers were coming in from the city to see it, but don't recall how much more. I took. it to a gallery and also showed it to a well known artist in East Hampton who both believed it was a Lely.
Dear Catherine,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal. Researching sich an Old Master painting is always connected with a higher effort of research.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil on canvas with the measurements of 30 x 26 inches. The painting depicts a woman with a pearl necklace and a costume of how it was common around 1670 to 1680. Especially the deep and shoulder free cut of the dress and the curls which lay draped over the forehead are typical for this fashion. The style and the yellowish color of the fabric are typical for Peter LELY (1618-1680) and his workshop. This painting can be attributed to this master and his workshop. Sadly this painting is in a difficult condition and it was obviously partly restored.
A fair market estimation would be between 3.000 to 6.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
I'm sorry, this all I have. It went missing in my move.
CjCook, but the back is very similar to one you have. It was conformed that the wood frame the canvas was stretched on was of a very old age. Compatible with wood of that period.
