Hello Owen,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Baluch Rug. The piece dates back to the period from 1960 to 1995. The piece has a characteristic Baluch pattern of three chests in the central area. Since this pattern was heavily used on the pieces with Persian origins we can classify it as such. Baluchi society is composed of nomad people and they are very good at traditional weavings. Baluch piece are usually made in a dark colour palette from pale tones of saffron to dark blues with red alongside. The piece is centrally decorated by three different medallions knotted on a shiny intense red. The medallions are decorated with ram horn, scorpion and geometrical motifs. The borders of the piece is also constructed very elegantly with chains of ram horns ans snakes as well as scorpions on the outer border, all are knotted on red base. The knot density of the piece is quite high for Baluch pieces and of course lower in comparison to City Rugs as Baluch pieces are Village Rugs. The piece is knotted wool on wool. the piece is in good condition with small signes of age and use.
