A sketch of unknown history that I picked up.
Approx 12”x18”
Hello Julie,
Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal and for your patience. I wanted to speak with our glass specialist before providing this appraisal because the drawing features what appears to be four glass bottles and the signature "Mangon," which I found during my research to be the name of a glassworks manufacturer or artist: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/111509373_signed-w-mangon
I thought this could be relevant, but according to Delia, our expert in glass, "If they [Mangon] were a glass craftsman, they had limited production," so even a positive attribution to this artist would not have much impact on the value of the drawing.
With these findings in mind, I believe that the presented object is simply an amateur drawing of four glass bottles, perhaps perfume bottles or decanters, in a semi-Cubist style. Recently achieved auction results for similar unattributed drawings would indicate a fair market value of $50 to 150, though retail and asking prices may vary.
If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know in the comments section below. All the best and thank you again!
Kind regards,
Anne
Hello Julie,
I can see how you might think that the signature reads "Manzoni." I could see that too, but I don't think an attribution to Piero Manzoni seems very likely with this piece. If you want us to look into it further, I'd recommend that you get in touch with our authentication team. You can reach out to them by email at [email protected]. Thanks again and all the best!
Kind regards,
Anne
Thank you, Anne, for taking time with this appraisal! I was hoping the signature said Manzoni... I knew it probably wasn't, but most of the letters were really close to Manzoni's signature... just hoped maybe he did drawings once in a while. Anyway, thank you for this detailed information. Julie
