The print was purchased through Everything But The House. I do not recall the price. It is approximately 11 inches by 17 inches. It is framed in a light-weight type of wood. It looks like the print is on top of the mat-like backing. Pictures are included. The mark on the bottom left looks like a feathered dragon or bird. The back of the dust cover is discolored paper and the handwriting reads,"Transmit of Luthers Cranach." The back also has a symbol in pencil like an 'M' with the inside lines crossed.
Unknown. I have had it a few years.
Dear Budd,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry and I wish you a Happy New Year 2021. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a print on paper with the measurements of 11 inches by 17 inches. This is the second version of a print made by the German artist Lucas I CRANACH (1472-1553) depicting the theologist Martin Luther. I attach the earlier version here (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Luther1546-holzschnitt.jpg). This print was probably made in the 1540s or later and could be a frontispiece of a bible or was made as a single print. This could be judged if I could see the reverse side of the print. In comparison to other prints by Cranach, the printing image is quite unsharp and undefined which is a hint for a higher edition.
Works by this artist were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 400 to 800 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
