What does this mean?

Hello Jonathan,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Pewter Mounted Glazed Earthenware With a Lid, 1/4-Litre Stein. The piece dates back to the period 1887. The piece is made in Mettlach, Germany where the main production center of the Villeroy and Boch pottery exists. The piece is in barrel shape with ivory and maroon highlights, the pewter lid is shaped as a flame. The piece is marked to the bottom with the Abbey mark and model number #1801 as well as the date indicator of "87" which referres to 1887. "Geschutzt" writing appears under the mark which means the design was copyrighted and could not be copied by third parties. The piece is in good condition without any visible problems.

Villeroy and Boch.

Dimensions: 5 Inches by 5 Inches
