38” long. Sword and scabbard. Scabbard is metal. The blade is straight with an edge on one side. The handle is slightly curved in and seems to have a coat of arms on one side. The guard has a bird on it with a sword in one talon and maybe a staff in the other.
My father owned it before me. It has been in the family a long time.
Dear Brad,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry and I wish you a Happy New Year 2021.
The presented object appears to be a German Imperial Prussian M1889 officer's sword with a length of 38 inches. The handguard shows the Prussian eagle and the monogram of Emperor Wilhelm II. Such pieces were produced in high numbers and are still often on the auction market. It comes with a scabbard and was made in the first half of the 20th century.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
