Minton Bone China Bowl

Description

Minton Bone China Bowl, made in England. ID number on the bottom is RS.OR.1895 and then there's a lower case i beneath that. That number didn't return any google search results, but using google lens on the front of the bowl, it appears to be the Brocade Floral collection possibly in light gray or cream.

What does this mean?

Hi Melissa,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Minton’s China refers to the English porcelain and earthenware produced by the Minton factory, founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1793 by Thomas Minton. Its importance lies in innovation, quality, and design leadership across the 19th century and Minton excelled at transfer-printed wares, fine bone china, Parian ware sculptures, and richly colored majolica.

The firm collaborated with leading designers and artists, notably Augustus Welby Pugin, which helped shape Victorian taste. Minton pieces were widely exhibited at international expositions, cementing global prestige. Collectors value Minton for crisp modeling, luminous glazes, and distinctive patterns, marked with factory backstamps that aid dating.

Your mark, featuring a laurel wreath with crown, the wording “FOUNDED MINTON 1793”, and “BONE CHINA – MADE IN ENGLAND” were used after World War II, primarily c. 1951 through the 1970s. The explicit “Made in England” phrasing reflects post-export-mark standardization and is typical of Minton’s revival branding after wartime disruption. The gilt code is either a decorator's/painter's code - Minton did not publicly release a comprehensive key to their decorator’s or painter’s codes, and none is known to survive in factory records that are accessible today - so it's impossible to say with certainty who painted this particular piece.

This does appear to be Minton's "Brocade" pattern with the floral variant; it was made with different colored borders - blue, green, pink and aqua, among others. It was made as full dinner and tea services; this would likely have been a serving bowl that was part of a much larger service.

Individual pieces from this era are not considered rare, though yours does appear to be in exceptionally good condition (the gilding does wear quite a bit with regular use so gilding losses are especially common) and, based on what similar ones in equally fine condition are selling for at auction, I would expect this to fetch between $50 and $75.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

third quarter 20th Century
Diameter: 8-1/2 inches
CONDITION: this bowl appears to be in good condition
