Mr. Blackwell custom vintage dress
25 November 2024
Description

Tag says Mr Blackwell custom. Additional tag was Cole Columbu. This sleeveless dress features a bold brown and white animal print, maybe giraffe or leopard? A gold embellished neckline with dangling ornaments, and a dark brown feather trim at the hem, creating a dramatic and unique look. Faux pocket detail in the front. A zipper up the back. No obvious signs of where or missing jewels. A few feathers have fallen off the bottom- without leaving an obvious spot from where they fell. No tag mentioning the fabric but it is lined.

What does this mean?

Hi Kate,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This Mr. Blackwell vintage giraffe print minidress was retailed at Cole of Columbus, which was a high-end department store located in Columbus that operated during the mid-20th century. It was known for its sophisticated offerings, including couture fashion and luxury goods. The store was considered a landmark for upscale shopping in the area and catered to an affluent clientele who sought premium brands and exclusive designs. Though Cole of Columbus is no longer in operation, its reputation as a cornerstone of style and sophistication in the city remains a part of local history. Like other luxury department stores of its time, it symbolized an era when in-person shopping experiences were paramount.

Blackwell's fashions have a widely varying market that sees higher prices in specialty couture and vintage clothing auctions, such as Augusta Auctions. This dress - with the jeweled neckline and dark marabou feather bottom trim - leans more towards "over the top" than some of his slightly more conservative designs and while I've not found an exact match, his designs of similar flair and vintage typically bring $500-700 when sold at specialty couture auctions.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
