Light blue Murano glass vessel with dark blue trim. It was purchased in Portofino, Italy in 1999 and we received it as a gift. The name of the store is on the sticker on the bottom and the store is still in business.
Portofino, Italy.
Good morning, Linda ,
Thank you for the dimensions of your urn, which is similar to the ancient Greek Kylixes, though yours has a nice baluster profile.
I have not found any auction sales of pieces by Baccerini - perhaps its too new to have come to the secondary market - but have found the following sales of similar enough pieces to suggest a fair market value for auction:
($325) - https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/ercole-barovier-toso-murano-art-glass-urn-vase-15-dc14f98aa0
($40) - https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/cobalt-blue-cenedese-scavo-murano-art-glass-vase-a764bf6b5e
($300) - https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/venini-murano-soffiati-art-glass-vase-in-the-sty-d8949a99f7
Based on the information and photographs provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A small Italian smoky blue art glass stylized Kylix-form urn
Made by Baccerini, Portofino, circa 1999
underside of foot bearing label
5 inches high, 8 inches wide across handles
PROVENANCE: received as a gift
$200-300 (represents a fair market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary)
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you for using Mearto.
Well I know the price paid for the piece was $350 and that was 20 years ago. I’ve seen the same piece but smaller being sold for $525 a few years back at a discount store in the US. So clearly your appraisal is off. Thanks.
Linda, I want to make sure you have the best experience possible on Mearto but raising the value is not sensible in the current market.
The prices you are quoting would have been retail and/or asking prices. Those are almost always higher than auction values, which are the values Mearto provides. Also, it is important to remember that not everything gets more valuable with age. There is a current trend away from antiques - millennials are not collecting antiques the way older generations used to, undercutting the market.
I put a lot of thought into the valuation of your urn and based it not only on internet research but also on more than 25 years experience working with furniture, glass, silver and porcelain (among other things) at auction houses from regional houses to international houses in New York City. If you can get a higher offer from someone who wants to purchase it, I would recommend taking it.
Let me what else I can do to give you a better experience here.
The height is approximately 5+ inches and the width at the top is 8”.
