Hello Ian,
Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal.
Based on the images you provided and the available information, this item is:
A Batik painting by Mussa Chiwaula. Batik is an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth. This technique originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap.
It depicts daily life of tribal African women. Chiwaula was once the director of the Federation of Disabled Persons in Malawi. He began making his art pieces in the 70s to 80s working with screen printing and batik.
Good condition.
