This rug was reportedly made from a native american tribe in Southern Texax (Apachee's?) It was reportedly made from mexican soldier uniforms, bound by horse hari, after a notable battle. The color red in the rug was not available to the tribe so that is why it's thought to be made from mexican soldier uniforms. The Rug measures 4 feet 10 inches by 8 feet. It is in excellent condition as it has been displayed on the wall.
It was previously owned by an admiral and was given to my mom's husband by the executor of the admiral's estate.
Greetings Andrea,
Thank you for your submission to Mearto. This is a beautiful Navajo wool blanket (aka rug and/or carpet). I can’t speak to the source of the fibers which were used for weaving, but I can tell you that the piece was properly hand-woven in wool and appears to be circa 1880 to 1910. In looking at similar pieces (unframed) which have sold at auction you could expect between $1200USD - $1700USD. However, once these same pieces are offered in a gallery the retail price is frequently 2 to 3 times the average auction price. That being said, gallery prices fluctuate depending upon regional variations and current interest. Additionally, if you have framed the piece properly and I suspect you have you may be able to account for the price of the framing in the overall value as well.
If you have any additional questions about this piece, please ask. Otherwise, thank you for your submission, take care and have a wonderful day.
Kindest Regards,
Erin-Marie
