I found this in an auction house on Australia. I think it might be native American but not sure. The auction had a description of "native indian" bowl. It is black, possibly mud material, surrounded by animal hide strips. It is heavy and the bottom is not quite flat. It stays up but tilted at an angle only. Has a rough texture. Its approximately 26cm high, 34cmwide with an opening of around 21cm in diameter. Any information would be appreciated!
Australian auction house in Brisnane. Nothing else is known.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an african earthenware vessel or jar, enforced with leatherbands, most likely used to carry water. Shape and execution resembles earthenware pottery from Nigeria but other areas on this vast continent might have come up with the same shapes. This could be an old or only vintage possibly second half 20th century item. Traditional production techniques have not changed and due to the climate things easily acquire patina. The estimate is based on similar items offered or sold at auction.
