Purchase this on the Yakima Indian reservation.. it appears to be a Navajo pottery vase.. it is signed and I believe the signature reads. Eileen Bell.. it states it is from a private collection. It's numbered has the date it was made.. just wondering what the value of this base is. The front features a cowgirl on a horse and it's raised off the vase
8 in tall, 8 in wide measured across the front of the vase and 3 and 1/2 in depth
Hi Kristin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The shape of this vase - a flattened oval - is somewhat unusual. I'm not familiar with the artist (Eileen Bell) and can't find anything about her in an online search. It employs a decorative technique called sgraffito, which involves scratching through a surface layer (often a slip or glaze) to reveal a contrasting color beneath. It is a method commonly employed in Native American pottery, including by some Navajo artists.
Other similarly decorated Navajo pottery articles of this size and vintage usually sell for between $200 and $300 at auction.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A contemporary Navajo sgraffito decorated earthenware vase
signed "Eileen Bell" and dated 1989
numbered 1 of 10 and #533
Of oval section, the front depicting a Native figure on a horse, both looking to the right, signed "Bell" lower right and inscribed underneath "Private Collection / Eileen Bell / "#533" 1989 1 of 10# / Navajo.
Height: 8 inches; width: 8 inches; depth: 3-1/2 inches
