This hand carved wooden piece was purchased at an estate auction. It measures 25” Tall x 3” Wide x 7” Deep It has a handle on the back and looks like it was built into either a stairwell or cabinet. The piece does have weight to it, and the wood does feel hollow in some places. I’m not sure if the paint has rubbed off over time or that was added for distressed look. Very curious as to what this was actually used for, what the hand carving is, is it antique and value. Thank you

Hello Natasha,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be wooden carved totem-type post featuring a young female figure to the lower portion and a masked figure to the upper portion. Unfortunately, the object does not appear to be African in origin. The features appear to resemble South Asian objects, possible Indonesia. The object appears to date to modern times, likely mid-20th century at the earliest, based on the condition of the wood and blue paint. The object is likely a tourist object, featuring elements in the style of ethnic cultures.
The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable objects, measuring to a similar size. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
