What does this mean?

Hello Michele,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, marks and the colours, I concluded that this is a Japanese Noritake Porcelain Tea Set from 1930-1940 period. Your set is from a period when the Noritake porcelain was still using "Hand Painted" mark and the hand paintined pieces in their collection. Probably all the decoration on your pieces are hand painted or hand painted and then transferred into the porcelain. When compared to it's contemporaries this pattern of your set can be considered as a modest one. The decoration is simple and focuses on one main drawing.

The main decoration of your piece depicts two traditional Japanese style birds on a basket full of Sakura tree branches. Although the general pattern seems like European-Western porcelain style, the details reveals the origin of the pieces. This "M" Noritake mark was first registered in 1920 an used by the company till the late 40's. I belive your's could be at most from late 1930's because earlier pieces tend to be more heavily decorated. Very collectable and decorative with some missing pieces. Lack of some crucial piece do decrease the market value.

Hand painted.

Pieces: 20 pieces present, one teacup and the lid for sugar bowl are missing.

Condition: In good condition without any suggested chips or cracks, 2 missing pieces.

Provenance: Purchased from an estate sale in early 1990's.

Simply decorated by bird and flower motifs.

150-200$.
