What does this mean?

Hi Kim,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Noritake was one of the most popular names for dinnerware in the mid 20th Century; not only was it handsome and serviceable but it was also comparatively affordable. Increasingly few people today, however, entertain in such a formal way and the market is saturated with services of varying sizes, colors, etc. Because there is less demand than supply, fair-market / auction prices for Noritake remain low, with dinner services typically bringing $4-6 PER PIECE.

The mark of "M" for Morimura in a wreath, crowned by "NORITAKE" and below, "Hand painted" and "Made in Japan" dates from 1921 to 1953 when the "M" was replaced with a "N" for Noritake.

Though this pattern doesn't have a name, the combination of iron-red and gold enamel, along with gilding, on a white ground and use of stylized red-ground flowers, recalls the Japonesque influence that began in the late 19th Century and continued through the mid 20th Century. The prominent gold rim banding with additional gold scroll or filigree accents, was aimed at the deliberately 'luxury table' aesthetic rather than casual dining.

*Most* tea sets that come to auction these days also include small dessert plates, used for cookies, cake slices or other foods served with tea; they are currently selling for between $25 and $50, even with plates.

Those without plates usually bring less than $30, though this pattern is particularly nice and I would expect these three pieces to sell for between $20 and $40.
