This is beautiful oil painting to what it seems painting on an old cigar box wood panel. There is a remanence of a cigar box stamp on the back. The cigar stamp dates between-1870 to 1890 . The wooden board measures 9.75''x6" so is the painting. The painting reminds me of Edgar Degas or Edward Manet nude style paintings.
Bought from the flea market, found it in a box full of woodblocks and old sketches of other artists. Provenance Boston Massachusetts
Dear Simon,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil or acrylic paint on board with the measurements of 9.75'' x 6". The painting depicts a female dancer in an ecstatic pose. Such motifs were common especially in France, Germany, and Austria around 1900. This painting was made highly possible as a copy after another painting. The depiction of the anatomy and the facial features are weaker than the whole composition. This is often a hint for a stronger painting which was made in an better quality. This motif is sadly not connected to the work of Degas or Manet.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
