This item is an oak wooden chest with 5 drawers. Measures 27x15x13". It has a large thin copper insert on top and over that insert is inserted a wooden rimed piece of glass. I have no idea? Please help. TIA.

Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I've discovered something nearly identical to your chest on Chairish, which is a retail website so the (primary market) values are quite a bit higher than the auction (secondary market) values Mearto appraises at. (https://www.chairish.com/product/2035949/antique-japanese-five-drawer-copper-lined-hibachi-c1870)
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Japanese oak or elm copper lined hibachi
late 19th Century
The rectangular chest inset with a copper bin over which a piece of framed glass is set, the case fitted with a stack of three short drawers, the lower part fitted with two short drawers.
13 inches high, 27 inches wide, 15 inches deep
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition with some wear commensurate to age and use.
$400-600*

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
Thanks, Mark. I found a chest virtually identical to this online; the link is included in the appraisal. You're all set.
The copper insert is above the drawers by ± 2"and is ± 6" deep in the middle. The copper was fixed securely at one time, still is but not as originally made. It would lift out if the few nails were not in place. Mark
