Old Bore Berger green clock from Madgeburg Germany around 1901. The clock is in decent shape. I have both keys and a letter from my Great grandmother telling my Grandmother how to take care of it. It has been with our family for at least 114 years.
Hi Laurie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
While Boré-Berger is not a widely documented clockmaker, it's likely that they retail-branded clocks made by larger German or French clock movement manufacturers (a common 19th-century practice). Magdeburg was home to several skilled metalworkers and clockmakers during the Wilhelmine era, and this piece fits that aesthetic (gilt bronze bezel, architectural face, ornate mounts). The keyholes suggest this is an 8-day time and strike movement — possibly striking on a bell or gong.
Made of green onyx rather than jade, this would probably have been sold alongside a pair of vases or candlesticks and would have been an impressive mantle garniture or "set." On it's own, this has a fair-market value of $500-700.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique cast-metal-mounted green onyx mantle clock
made by or retailed by Boré-Berger, in Magdeburg, Germany, circa 1900-1910
Surmounted by a tall finial on molded circular socle on a stepped top, the cast brass dial with Arabic chapter rings and cast steel or iron minute and hour hands, with cast metal mounts, the sides with cast metal mounts, on an outset molded base with cast brass applied elements on short metal feet.
