What you have here is a Japanese Wakizashi. Its a little shorter then the Katana but longer then the Tanto. These swords have different purpose in japan. Wakizashi is made specially to defend oneself. Its short and therefor you could move quick. Your Wakizashi has a rye skin handle. I cannot see if its original but beacuse of the age I believe there is no worry about being an imitation. This sword is made in late 19th / early 20th century. It appears not to been made of the best steel but that is hard to see. Tsuba ( hand guard between the blade and the handle ) is made of bronze and has gilding. It is of good quality. Signature I cannot read but these older Japanese swords are sought after. I would recommend bringing it to auction with a solid background in selling Japanese art. My estimation is conservative as I do not know the maker and I am not sure about the quality of the steel.
