Not sure where it was made or what it’s made of, maybe copper or brass? Good condition for its age.

Hi Carl,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Yes, this is a Dhal - a traditional Indian or Indo-Persian round shield, commonly used from the Mughal era (16th century) through the 19th century. The radiating rib pattern, which is both decorative and structural, was used in Indo-Persian and North Indian variants. It has an umbo or central boss, which is raised and often floral or pierced, like in yours. The floral boss and ribbed radiating design is consistent with Indian metallurgy aesthetics from the 18th–19th century. It features mounting points for lost bosses or decorative studs and strap handles.
These shields were often made from steel, brass, or hide, and could be richly decorated with silver or gold inlay—though this one appears more utilitarian or aged. Related Dhals that are sold at auction today bring between $800 and $1,200, though you can find similar ones at higher retail prices online but most of those are finer models in slightly better condition.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Northern Indian, Rajasthan, or Mughal steel Dhal
18th or 19th Century
23 inches diameter
CONDITION: This appears to be in fair condition with some surface losses and lacking handles.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$800-1,200*

Hi Carl,
Your photos are excellent and just what I needed to see to confirm that this is an authentic (rather than a replica with more exaggerated curves.)
You're all set with this appraisal - thanks again for using Mearto.
