Great Aunt
Dear Kevin,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your Great Aunt's vase to Mearto. You have a Japanese earthenware ceramic vase made in the late 19th century for export to the western market.
This type of ware is referred to as Satsuma-ware and the character marks on the base reinforce this. The circle with the 'plus' sign is known as the 'Shimazu family crest' and is seen on many Satusuma wares, on your piece is it is found on the base and repeated on the side as well (in this case, the Shumazu family crest does not mean that family made this piece, it is simply present on most Japanese Satsuma-wares). The other characters on the base refer to the phrase 'Dai Nippon Satsuma' or 'Made in Satsuma'.
Regarding value, if this piece was in perfect condition I'd anticipate it bringing between $40 - $80USD at auction which is where vases of similar age and size usually sell. However, with the chip you must anticipate about 50% of that estimate so between $20 - $40USD.
Thank you again for taking the time to submit images of this vase to Mearto and If you have any follow-up questions, I am at your service.
Sincerely,
Erin-Marie
