The painting was done using four colours supplied by the guard whose name was James Armstrong. it was done circa 1944-5. Dimensions are approx 30ins by 20in in frame, condition is good. I am the son of the deceased subject.
It's a family heirloom, inherited by myself, I being the last remaining child of that family group
This is a World War II fine art portrait of James Armstrong that was done by a German POW around 1944 - 1945. The author, or artist, of the portrait painting is unknown. The materials were a limited palette. A large number of talented and capable artists, whether professional or hobbyist, existed on both sides during the war. With much idle time on one's hands, especially as a POW, it was not uncommon for art to help pass the time but also bridge the gap between 'enemies'. This likely has far more sentimental and personal value to you than any monetary value can equal. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction records of comparables.
