An extraordinary pair of oversized elephant head wall sculptures by Maitland-Smith, renowned for their finely crafted furniture and decorative art pieces. These striking wall mounts are made of fiberglass and were expertly crafted in Indonesia. Their rarity suggests they may be custom-made—possibly one-of-a-kind—commissioned by Maitland-Smith around 20 years ago. To date, we've found nothing quite like them, making this pair a truly unique.
Each measure approximately 54" wide x 60" high
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Maitland‑Smith’s life‑size elephant head wall sculptures—like the fiberglass and brass examples shown—were introduced as part of their decorative art accessories during the late 1970s into the 1980s.
The company was founded in Hong Kong in 1979, with early production of fantastical decorative accessories—many featuring animal motifs—manufactured in the Philippines and reflecting mid‑century Hollywood Regency flair
Documentation and dealer records show that many of Maitland‑Smith’s sculptural animal pieces—including elephants—are consistently cataloged as circa 1980s.
Related elephant heads that have come up for auction have sold for fair-market (akin to wholesale) prices ranging from $2,000-3,000 EACH, making a pair worth $4,000-6,000 at auction; note this will be less than retailers will be asking for comparable models they are selling.
