Hi Christine,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Mount Washington Glass Company (often mistakenly called the Mount Washington Lamp Company) was founded in 1837 in South Boston, Massachusetts, and later operated in New Bedford. It became one of America’s most important 19th-century art glass firms. Originally producing utilitarian glass, it gained fame in the 1870s–1890s for luxury decorative wares such as Burmese glass (its most famous innovation), Peachblow, Crown Milano, Lava, and satin glass. Many pieces were mounted in silver or bronze as lamps and decorative objects. Mount Washington exhibited internationally and won awards. The company declined after 1900 and closed in 1894, though its name remained influential.
In the 1890s, it became closely associated with Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, which specialized in fine metalwork and silverplate. By the early 20th century, the companies were effectively merged, operating as Pairpoint Corporation.
The iconic Pairpoint “puffy” lamps were developed around 1907–1910 by Pairpoint designers, most notably C. F. Monroe (Clyde Fitch Monroe). These lamps featured reverse-painted glass shades with hand-painted floral, landscape, or figural scenes, a slightly bulbous or “puffed” shape and illuminated scenes created by painting on the inside of the glass.
While identical lamps used to sell in the $3,m000-4,500 range, the market has cooled a bit and other Pairpoint "puffy" lamps with this model of shade and base have been offered at auction recently, most sell between $1,500 and $2,500
