Hello Megan,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persia Avakian Rug with Heriz Rug patterns. The piece dates back to the period from 1925 to 1940. The term "Iran" was used from 1907 instead of Persia but it wasn't common to be seen on rugs till early 1930's. Avakian brothers was a New York Company which imported oriental rugs to the US from Iran. Their rugs had many different patterns adapting motifs from various traditional Persian rugs. This piece specificly adapts motifs and it's general pattern from the Heriz rugs. The piece is centrally decorated with a central medallion and the majority of the motifs are floral.Although the industrialized colours were used on the piece, due to the use for years and sun exposure the colours are worn off to exquisite antique tones. These pieces were knotted mostly exclusively for the company and the Persian asymmetrical knot was used during the production. The piece's pile is wool hile it's foundation is cotton. It was labeled with a serial number of "5596" on the back alongside an Avakian Borthers writing. The knot density of the piece is average for the period and the motifs are rendered beautifully. Since the pile of the piece lowered by time and use the motifs' precision increased in time. The central base colour is red while the borders are decorated on a drk blue base colour. The piece is in good condition with minimal signes of use and age.
