Edmond Thomas Parris (1793 - 1873) was a British artist who was known for landscape, figure and portrait painting. This is a portrait of a 3/4 view of a seated bearded European, UK or Continental man wearing Turkish garb. This appears to be dates 1834, though possibly the date could be 1854 (a close-up of the signature/date will decipher that). The image is done in a palette and format that shows the influence of the 17th century Dutch Old Master painter, Rembrandt van Rijn, who was known for using himself as a model (due to financial issues). This may *possibly* be a self-portrait of Parris himself. What cannot be definitively stated here is whether this is an original watercolor or a print. For the intents and purposes here, the estimate is on the assumption that this is an original watercolor and that the size is under 12". Parris has a listed record of auction sales, the highest being $8000 in 1999, which is an aberration in comparison to the average auction sale of any sale since. There is a painting that sold of a panoramic atmospheric landscape in Turkey, which is evidence of his travels there. That sold for $4624 in 2014 - and another in 2011 sold for $4299. The next several dozen paintings sold to auction were under $400 each mostly. The value of this would vary whether it is an unknown sitter in Turkish garb or a self-portrait of the artist in Turkish garb. No known other images of him were yielded for comparison. The estimate is based on actual past auction records with the high being a consideration that this may be a self-portrait of the artist. This valuation, however, is not an authentication of such.
