Hi KaraLee,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Patrick Kelly (1954–1990) was a trailblazing American fashion designer who gained international fame in the 1980s, especially in Paris. He was celebrated for his exuberant, colorful, and bold designs that challenged conventions and celebrated Black culture and heritage.
Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Kelly developed an interest in fashion at a young age.
He studied art and fashion design at Jackson State University and later moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion. Kelly moved to Paris in 1979, drawn by the city's more inclusive and open fashion scene. He began by selling his designs at Les Halles and gained attention for his playful, joyful aesthetic and references to African-American culture; in this jacket, those references are seen in the sawtooth stitched detail throughout.
In 1988, he became the first American designer to be admitted into the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, a significant achievement that marked his status in haute couture.
Patrick Kelly's designs come to the auction market from time to time; pieces similar to this have sold at auction recently for prices ranging from $300-700.
