15’x26” runner
Been in family for 40 years
Hello Chris,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is a Vintage Persian Malayer Rug made in Iran, dating back to the period between 1960-1980. Malayer rugs are one of the most famous semi-tribal rugs of all Oriental Rugs and of Iran. They have very characteristic motifs from different periods. These motifs and the pattern we see on your piece resembles later pieces from 1970’s. Although the composition of thispiece is very full and almost crowded the elegant alignment of the earlier pieces is missing. Your piece has a continuous pattern as we mostly see in runner rugs instead of a central decoration. Since runner rugs are mostly used for hall ways the central decoration is considered to be in contrast to this used, especially in contemporary period after early 20th century most of the runner pieces were knotted without a central decoration. Most of the decoration is floral, in each end of the piece we can see a larger flower which resembles and marks the start and the finish of the runner rug. Colour of your piece is very well reflects the characteristics of Malayer Pieces, the wool quality is of average quality for contemporary pieces. When we investigated the knotting technique we can see that it is knotted in a ver industrial style almost like a machine rug and fringes might have see some restoration in the past since they seem somehow out of place. Your piece appears to be knotted wool on cotton. It is in good condition with signes of use and age.
