Hello Kari,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is a Persian Semnan Rug made around 1980-1990. It is considerably a newer production but still has the traditional pattern and characteristics of Semnan Rugs. These pieces are considerably rare in comparison to other Persian rugs in the western market. This is because the Semnan area is very small in terms of inhabitants and the production is very limited. In the 19th century pieces from Semnan were only made for domestic demand and not for export. After the early 20th century Semnan started to being known by the collectors beause of it's vibrant colours and tight knots. Knot density is only average in comparison to other Persian Carpets.
The piece is mostly decorated by floral patterns growing around a central medallion as it is in traditional composition. Although the piece is not an antique we can easily detect some serious ware to the surface. The wool quality is lower in comparison to earlier pieces. These piece is knotted by the asymmetric knot technique (Persian Knot). The pile of the piece is cotton while the knots are made of wool material. Edges are also has some loss and ware.
Entirely hand knotted.
Dimensions: 8 feet by 11 feet
Condition: Fair condition with some considerable wear to the surface.
Provenance: Given by a friend to the owner.
Heavily decorated by traditional floral patterns and a central medallion.
300-400$.
