What does this mean?

Hello Doug,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Najafabad Persian Rug, dating back to the period between 1970-1990. Najafabad Rugs actually just points out the production are of the rug in Iran as Najafabad piece almost always follows the Isfahan Rug Pattern. They are usually known as the more affordable alternatives to Isfahan pieces and it is not wrong to label them as Isfahan pieces. Najafabad is a central city in Iran, near Isfahan. The city became a production center in mid 20th century and in this period the western market met the pieces from Najafabad. Usually knot counts of these are a lot less than Isfahan pieces.

As we see in Isfahan pieces, your rug has a central decoration with a medallion. The medallion has a floral pattern just like the rest of the rug including borders. This very bright tone of red used on the base is a characteristic feature to these rugs. Although Isfahan pieces vary in colour almost all Najafabad pieces are knotted on a red base. We can see ivory and blue tones through the decoration. Due to the lower knot density in comparison to ısfahan pieces the motifs on your rug are rendered somewhat muddy. Labeled and generally in fair condition with signes of use and with considerable loss in one corner. Knotted wool on wool.

Entirely hand knotted.

Dimensions: 12 Feet by Feet 2 Inches

Condition: Generally in fair condition with signes of use and with considerable loss in one corner

Provenance: Inherited from customer's parents, parents purchased the piece from a carpet dealer in Augusta, GA. The dealer is no longer in bussiness.

Heavily decorated by traditional Isfahan patterns.

800-1000$.
