What does this mean?

Hello Lee,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Antique Turkish Rug, the piece is specifically made in Cucasia, therefore also can be categorized as a Caucasian Rug. The piece was likely knotted between 1900-1920 period. The pile and the foundation are both made of hand made wool. The piece has the classicalcolour palette of traditional Caucasian Rugs with a slightly embossed surface as usually seen. The colours of the piece might be made of naturally obtained dyes, likely it was but still needs to be examined further. The piece has a very unique decorative pattern characterized by flowers, chains and ram horns as usual t a Caucasian rug. There is no central decoration which means there is no central medallion on the piece. Instead it's central area was decorated with duplicated ram horns as flowers with connections between them, likely inspired from Persian Herati pattern. There re also visible "çengel" motifs which is a closed circuit needle to attach a certain object to a cloth or to enclose a fabric. This otifa re all belived to be protecting from the owner of the rug from the evil. As well as protection ram horn motifs symbolize the fertility and power. The piece has six different border with a variety of decrations, this number of variations and borders certify the high quality of the piece. What makes this piece a special production is that likely this piece was not knotted to be sold or for a commercial purpose but was rather knotted for the artist's own use. This is one of the most important qualities a piece can have. The central are of the piece was decorated on a deep red colour while the border were knotted on a Turquoise and White base as well as the some tone of red. The piece's knot density is average, quite normal for a Caucasian Village Rug. The obscure propotions are the proof of it's age since the contemporary pieces are more standart in their sizes. The piece is in good condition with small signes of use and age.

Entirely hand knotted.

Dimensions: Unknown.

Condition: The piece is in good condition with small signes of use and age.

Provenance: A generational heritage of the current owner's family.

Heavily decorated by traditional Caucasian patterns.

3000-4500$.
