Hello Andrea,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Tabriz-East Azerbaijani Rug in very high quality. The piece dates back to the period from 1950 to 1980. The pattern of the piece is a quite rare design called "Old Bowl And Jar" or originally "Kase and Kozeh". The piece is decorated very heavily with countless diferent motifs from bowls to vases as well as daggers to floral objects. The piece was knotted with the Persian Asymmetrical Knot and therefore the circular patterns and the fluid transition of the motifs are executed in a superior quality and clarity. The knot density of the piece is also quite high. The material of the piece is wool on cotton. The piece is not centrally decorated but it rather has a very busy and one of a kind pattern on the central area. When we observe this area we can detect medallions composed of mythical creatures as well as a crane, crane is a symbol of life, death and afterlife in the Persian mythology. Deers and birds were also depicted alongside decorative objects like vases, bags and bowls. The borders were decorated with continuous duplicated patterns composed of a bowl with a saucer, vase and a set of dagger and scabbard. The piece was signed by the artist at it's lower mid area to it's border, this means this piece was made to be used on the floor rather than to be ahnged on the wall. A highly collectable piecw with superior design and quality. The piece is in good condition without any significant problems.
