Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Kotted Persian Heriz Rug. The piece dates back to the period from 1930 to 1950. The piece was classically decorated as a Heriz rug as well as a classical Heriz pattern. Heriz pieces are one of the most prestigeous Villager rugs of all Iran. The piece's do usually follow a one type general outline but differs in details. The piece is centrally decorated with a central medallion which was floral in decoration. The piece is mostly floral in it's decoration as well. The villager rugs such as Heriz are less circular and detailed in decoration due to their lower knot density in comparison to city rugs such as Tabriz or Qom. Due to this disadvantage more geometrically constructed motifs were chosen in order to higher the rendering quality of a motif and increase it's clarity. The piece's central are was knotted on an intense red base while the borders were decorated on a dark blue base. The piece was knotted wool on wool. The dyes used on the piece are industrialised dyes and not natural dyes but the tones of the pieces are quiteimpressive and natural, a sign of high quality. The piece is in good condition with visible signes of use and age.

Provenance: The current owner's wife’s grandfather had it in his office in Europe in the early to mid 1900's, the origin of purchae in unclear but he was a wealthy man with habits of purchasing high quality items.
