Hi Keith,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is a European backsword; they were popularized in the Renaissance (15-16th Century) and are denoted by the straight single-edged blade and shaped hilt with basket-form knuckle guard (yours is a modified example). These had a heavy-slicing capacity and were favored largely by foot soldiers during wars, gaining widespread usage across the battlefield.
It is, as you note, a fairly primitive example with a wooden handle and the large rosehead studs. In it's current condition, this is worth $300-500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Renaissance style backsword
European, possibly as early as 15/16th Century
With turned wood grip, iron knuckleguard, crossguard with eyelet quillions, single-edged straight blade and tapered point.
29 inches overall
CONDITION: This is in fair condition with oxidation, breaks and shrinkage to handle.
PROVENANCE: Unknown
$ 300-500*
