An Edwardian Peach Blow Cabbage mold bud vase or candleholder attributed to Fenton, Ohio or West VA, early 20th Century
02 May 2025
Description

I’m submitting this piece for appraisal and possible authentication. It is a large, heavy, petal-shaped art glass/ceramic bowl or fairy lamp base, in a pink cased glass with white interior. The exterior has raised petal detailing and a frosted/satin finish that transitions from deep rose to pale pink. The interior is glossy white. There are no visible marks, but there is a rough pontil on the bottom. I believe it could be Victorian-era, possibly by Mt. Washington or another high-end American art glass maker. It appears hand-blown. I’ve only seen one similar piece online (listed for $400+), while others with smoother sides are much more common and lower in price. I’m hoping to confirm its origin, approximate age, rarity, and fair market value.

What does this mean?

Hi Erin,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Both Mount Washington (Boston/South Boston, late 19th Century) and Fenton (founded in 1905 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, later moved to Williamstown, WVa) made these cased glass bowls but the cabbage model - denoted by the articulated sides, was made by FENTON, not by Mount Washington.

The Small size of denotes it may have been used as a candleholder (is there wax residue on the inside) and would have been sold as part of a 3-piece set, with another candleholder of similar size and a larger centerpiece bowl.

While online venders (both antiques dealers and private sellers) may be asking a few hundred dollars for similar examples, this model has been selling at auction for between $150-200 recently.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
