Glass Quezal vase, approximately 8.5 inches tall, 6 inches wide at top, and 3 and 3/4 inches wide at base. Vase is in excellent condition with no known defects. Hand-signed.
My stepdad owned this before me, he was an avid art glass collector. It has been in the family for approximately 30 years and in my possession for 15, other than that I do not know any details. Likely purchased in the early 90s on ebay.
Hi Nicole,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Quezal iridescent gold lily-form vase
New York, early 20th Century
Of trumpet form with ruffled rim in the Lily pattern, the body in an allover even iridescent gold, signed Quezal underneath the foot.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$300-500*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
The values Mearto provides are fair-market, for, auction purposes. The standard industry multiplier to convert to an insurance value - which is more in-line with retail pricing in this case is about $800.
If you decide to take this to auction, an auction house that has a specialist in early 20th Century studio glass will know how to market this for maximum result; you should be able to get an auction estimate free of charge from any house and it's worth getting a second or even third opinion as there can be minor regional differences in the various markets, though that playing field has largely been leveled thanks to online auctions that have a global reach.
You can always approach a dealer of this material to see if they will buy it from you directly but it's important to keep in mind that most retailers will try to acquire things for as little as possible so they can retain the maximum on any return they get when they sell it.
I will say that there is a lot of Quezal on the market, of varying degrees of desirability, workmanship, etc. While your vase has a lovely shape, many collectors prefer glass with multiple colors and/or designs so having a uniform color as this may work against it.
Thank you. Is there any way to tell what this is worth (retail or asking), how in demand it is right now, or a general known differential between the two (retail vs market value price)? I was hoping by getting it appraised I would get insight into the retail potential.
