Raf Simons is one of the most influential and cerebral fashion designers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries — admired for bridging youth culture, art, music, and intellectual design within the framework of luxury fashion. His eponymous menswear brand, Raf Simons, was launched in 1995 in Antwerp; while he had no formal fashion training, he studied Industrial and furniture design at LUCA School of Arts, Genk, Belgium, and interned with Walter Van Beirendonck (one of the Antwerp Six), who introduced him to the fashion world and encouraged him to attend shows in Paris.

His Riot! Riot! Riot! collection in the Fall/Winter 2001 was staged in an industrial warehouse setting (in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris region) with scaffolding, fog/smoke, and a techno/industrial soundtrack; it marked his return to designing after a roughly one-year sabbatical during which he taught and consulted in Vienna.
