Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a painting by Raymond Perry Rodgers Neilson (1881 β 1964), depicting a race horse and groom in the tradition of british sporting paintings. The artist is well known for his portraits of the rich and famous of his era. Some of his impressionistic paintings sell very well. The painting in your possession is a portrait of the race horse "Barony Bird" (?) owned by Mr. Baldwin. This Mr. Baldwin appears to be Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin (April 3, 1828 β March 1, 1909) who had a keen interest in horse racing. Judging from the craquelure within the painting, caused by painting on not completely dry oil paint, it appears to be an early work by Neilson, which would date the painting to 1905-1909. Further research in historic records of the Santa Anita Park racetrack should confirm it. The estimate is based on other paintings by the artist offered or sold at auction and should have a good potential if offered in the right auction.
