The appraised work appears to be a copy of a larger painting entitled The Roper (1913) by William Robinson Leigh that recently sold at auction. Leigh was known for frontier, genre, landscape and animal paintings, and he was active in West Virginia, Wyoming, New Mexico and New York. The artist is noted for his realistic style with a distinctive color palette of mainly soft pinks, reds, yellows and purples—which give his paintings a distinctly Southwestern aesthetic.
The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
