Ruby red decorative plate
27 April 2019
Description

This is a ruby red "fruit" decorative plate, 41.5cm radius and 6.5cm tall. It has a "texture" in the glass, as well as bubbles and imperfections. It weights about 920 grams. The thickness of the glass is about 5mm on the outermost rim, and about 2.5-3mm inside. You can see 2 small chips on the bottom. And that really is nothing short of a miracle, since it survived many decades among some of the strongest earthquakes in the world, in Chile - including a 8.8 magnitude earthquake in 2010.

Provenance

I got this as a gift from my mother, after her mother, my grandmother, passed away in 2012. My grandmother inherited this from her mother-in-law (my [step]great-grandmother). She was an Italian woman who married my widowed English great-grandfather, and they (including 2 children who were from my great-grandfather's first marriage) migrated to Chile at some point before or around 1930. It's my understanding this piece came from Italy, or England - Europe. I imagine it could've been a wedding gift. Unfortunately, since my grandmother's passing I have no way to verify the story, but this is what my mother, uncle and aunt have told me.

What does this mean?

Dear Vicente,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. The presented object is a glass bowl with the measurements of 41.5cm radius and 6.5cm tall. This fruit bowl was made out of red colored glass and was probably made in Northern Italy in Venice. Pieces in this size, shape, and color could be a wedding gift. The technique is not totally clear and the question, if this is a mouth-blown glass or made in a pressed glass technique, is not clear on the base of images. Pressed glass mold leave gaps in the glass mass and mouth-blown pieces have a stub where the piece was fixed while making it. So the use of mold is more probable for this piece. Nevertheless, it is a very large and decorative piece.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Georg,
I was hoping you'd be able to make a determination on the technique from the pictures showing the bottom of the bowl, close to where the chips are.
If you look closely, there are several of what looks to me like cut stems, around the center ring. They are perfectly round. They could be molding marks, too. Again, you're the expert here!
Just thought I'd point it out, and hope that you can look again.
Thanks!

Dear Vincente,

Thank you for your message and your patience. Sadly regarding technical problems, the new images and messages were not displayed. I apologize for the delay. We come here sadly to the limits of an online appraisal. In my opinion, we have a pressed glass production but this needs to be examined physically.

With kind regards,
Georg
