Hello Michele,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Caucasian Perpedil Contemporary Rug. The piece dates back to the period between 1970-1990. The piece is decorated with the motif of classical Caucasian Perpedil rugs with small differences in scales and duplications. The piece was centrally decorated with use of floral chests, the central vertical axe is divided by the use of ram horn motifs to several rows. Ram Horn is the most important motif on Perpedil rugs as it was a symbol of fertility and power, therefore the continuity of the bloodline. These pieces are usually seen in dark blue and ivory tones. This suggests that the piece might have been reproduced in some other production center such as Indian or Pakistan based on Perpedil rugs. Star motifs, fire motifs and birds were among the depicted figures. The central area was knotted on a white base while to borders of the piece were decorated on dark saffron, brick and mud coloured bases. The piece was knotted wool on cotton and the knot type is noticably different. The colours used on the piece were obtained by industrial dyes and not naturally made dyes. The piece'S knot density appears to be average and therefore the motifs were rendered in average quality and clarity. The piece is in good condition with signes of use and age, loss to fringes and possible need of cleaning.
