An antique Persian silk Tree of Life Tabriz carpet, late 19th Century
18 December 2024
Description

I inherited the rug in 1977. It had been in my husband's family for many years. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of history. I was told it is a Tabriz silk antique rug. One person who saw it many years ago said it could have a value of $50,000, but I have no idea. The knott density is very good and in excellent condition. The back side is as beautiful as the front side. I do not see a signature. If you need better or more photos, please let me know. Please include, at a minimum, the estimated value, time period, and location in which it was made and the material used.

What does this mean?

Hi Charlotte,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The Tree of Life motif symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth, growth, and immortality. The main feature is a tree, often starting from the base of the rug and reaching upwards, symbolizing life, growth, and spiritual ascent. It is often surrounded by flowers, leaves, and fruits, symbolizing abundance and fertility. In some carpets, the tree is framed by an arch, reminiscent of a gateway or prayer niche (mihrab) in Islamic architecture; your carpet includes this as seen at the top of the overall photo, where there are darker red shaped panels.

The antique carpet market has changed considerably in recent years, with several key collectors aging out of the market and a shift among the design industry to focus on more contemporary carpets. The value of $50,000 would likely have been a RETAIL price rather than the fair-market / auction values Mearto uses.

In the current market, this has a value of $2,000-3,000.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Persian silk Tree of Life Tabriz carpet

Thank you very much for your appraisal of my Persian rug.
It was a very good description, and I like the fact that it is a "Tree of Life" rug. It makes it more meaningful to me.
Although a little disappointed in the estimated value, it certainly is a beautiful rug.
Thank you again.
Merry Christmas.
