This piece has been in my family for more than 50-60 years. It’s from the capital of Iran, Tehran where my father bought it from an art store. The age of the piece is unknown but it is more than 50-60 years old. It’s a depiction of Abraham “Sacrifice of Isaac”. From what I have been told, it is painted on cow skin and was painted by potentially an illiterate artist. the last time is was appraised in the early 90’s I believe a collector said it is worth $10K.

Hello, this item is a large religious painting depicting the biblical and Quranic subject of the Sacrifice of Isaac, attributed to Persian devotional and folk painting traditions. Based on the composition, costume types, facial stylization, and narrative arrangement, this work aligns closely with Iranian popular religious painting from the mid 20th century, most plausibly produced between the 1940s and 1960s. The figures, with elongated proportions, simplified anatomy, and expressive gestures, reflect a workshop or self taught painter working outside the academic fine art canon. The iconography corresponds to Abraham preparing the sacrifice, surrounded by angelic figures, rendered in a manner consistent with Iranian coffeehouse and devotional painting rather than classical miniature painting. The support appears to be animal hide or prepared leather, which was occasionally used in regional folk contexts, though this does not indicate great antiquity.
Condition shows age related surface wear, craquelure, and structural stress to the support, visible in the reverse and along the edges, all of which materially affect value. While such works carry strong cultural and devotional interest, they are not considered rare or museum level examples of Persian painting. Comparable Iranian folk religious paintings of similar scale and subject typically trade in the range of USD 1,500 to USD 3,000, depending on condition and visual impact. Based on the images provided and current market demand, a realistic present day market value for this painting would be approximately USD 2,000 to USD 2,500. The earlier informal valuation of USD 10,000 from the early 1990s is not supported by current market evidence.
