This appears to be a scrimshaw carved case with the person’s name being H.A. BRUCH. Has brass fittings with birds itched on each side. Case opens. Case measured approximately 4” wide, 23/3 deep and 1” thick. On the front along with what appears to be the person’s name along with a few other words is the word Steinseltz.
Belongs to my brother in law who was an antique collector.
Hi Gary,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Currently, there are varied laws that limit the sale of antique elephant ivory; if you wish to sell this at auction, you may first need to establish the ivory species through micro-analysis and you may also be asked to identify where your brother acquired it .
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A incised and brass mounted scrimshaw veneered card or cigarette case
Probably Continental, dated 1832
Of elongated oval section, the hinged lid inscribed "H.A. Bruch / pastern reform / a Steinseltz / 1832"; with cedar(?) lining and brass ends engraved with birds.
1 inch high, 4 inches wide, 2 3/4 inches deep
