Hi Daniel,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
S. Bent & Brothers was founded in 1867 in Gardner, MA, which earned the nickname the “Chair City” because of the many chair and furniture makers based there. According to sources, S. Bent & Bros. remained in operation until around the year 2000 (or possibly 2001) when it closed. They had a manufacturing facility at 60 Mill Street.
They specialized in chairs — particularly Windsor-style chairs, captain’s chairs, rocking chairs, and other “Colonial Revival” furniture styles. Their woods of choice often included maple and sometimes ash, often stained to resemble oak or other finish styles. The company produced institutional chairs (for colleges/universities), dining chairs, children’s chairs, and other furniture pieces.
Most S Bent & Bros chairs that come to auction today sell for quite modest sums, particularly when sold as individual chairs but having sets of multiples - particularly so many - is more desirable than just six times the value of one. Where one chair might be worth $20-30, this set of 6 would probably sell for the fair market values of between $150 and $300 at auction. Note that dealers will be asking a (possibly much) higher retail price.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage set of 6 Colonial Revival style incised oak wide chairs
early 20th century
Each with incised rounded crest raised on bentwood stiles over five "blade" spindles, the shaped plank saddle seat raised on ring-turned tapering legs joined by a box stretcher. Labeled underneath the seat.
Each 39 inches overall height
CONDITION: These appear to be in good condition.
PROVENANCE: Acquired from a dealer or gallery.
$150-300 for the set*
