Hi Julie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This two-piece meat set was made in Sheffield by Martin Hall & Co., in 1876. The was a prominent British silversmith firm based in Sheffield, with origins dating back to 1820. Throughout its existence, Martin, Hall & Co. expanded its operations, opening showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, and even Sydney. The company was renowned for its high-quality silverware, often featuring intricate designs and patterns. They also embraced innovative production techniques, such as electroplating, which revolutionized the silverware industry in the mid-19th century. Their product range included tableware, candlesticks, and other decorative objects. The firm was awarded several royal warrants, including one from Queen Victoria, solidifying its reputation as a premier silversmith. Despite its success, the company faced challenges in the early 20th century due to increasing competition. In 1933, Martin, Hall & Co. was acquired by Frank Cobb & Co., marking the end of its independent operations.
The knife or slice in this set would not have been used to carve the meat or game but rather to serve it; it is larger than a fish serving knife would be, and the hunting scene on the handle confirms its use for meat/game rather than fish.
