This is a rocker, slipper chair, antique, and has a rush seat. What sets it apart is that it is not a ladder back style. It also has a sticker attached which gives some clues as to the history of the piece. The rush seating and finish all appear to be original.
I was trying to purchase a child's rocking chair for a friend's daughter. I saw this beautiful rocker and it was advertised as a "child's rocker." It was an online auction from Transitional Design (OH), and I bid online w/out ever seeing the piece. When I picked it up, it was obvious that this was NOT a child's rocker because the seat was much too large. The small tag on the bottom, apparently attached by the owner's daughter, indicated that this was a slipper chair. It is a lovely piece, just not what I was looking for. Thus, I'd like to find a fair value for it so that I can attempt to resell.
Dear Betty,
Thank you for your request. The apprised object is a rocking or slipper chair made out of the wood and rush woven seat. The wood is possible nut wood. The size is indeed too big for a child rocking chair and the interpretation of this piece of furniture as a slipper chair is possible. Slipper chairs developed since the 18th century as low chairs to put on shoes for example in woman's bedrooms. This chair was made in the late 19th or first half of the 20th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 100 to 300 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
