Purchased in Taiwan in late 1950s.
Thank you for contacting Mearto.
The painting is done in an underglaze style, meaning the cobalt design is painted before the final glaze. This technique produces a soft quality to the work.
The characters on the back are the artist’s name or a company name. This is unusual, as most Chinese porcelain has six or four characters on the back, denoting the era in which it was produced.
The artist depicts a Chinese scholar, or literati, amidst pine trees specific to that country.
The plate appears to be in the style of ko-sometsuke porcelain, ceramics produced for export to Japan in the late Ming period. Figural subjects and a bent toward muddiness/imperfection (evidenced by the circles framing the subject) were valuable to Japanese buyers at the time.
Chinese period ceramics are sometimes inauthentic reproductions. This piece appears to be authentic, but please bear that in mind.
The piece is in good condition. Ko-sometsuke ware is highly collectible. Based on sales of similar items, the Fair Market Value of this piece is between $300 and $400.
